As I look out of my window at the bright sunshine it is difficult to think that winter is on it ' s way even though I have to turn the heating up from time to time to warm my aging bones . The November / December period is always the busiest for the Mayoralty and with this in mind I thought it might be useful to remind you of a couple of events for your diary . On Armistice Day 11th November , there will be a brief ceremony outside the Council Chamber at which the Royal British Legion will be laying a wreath . On Sunday 13th November the main Remembrance Day event will take place starting with laying a wreath at the Loco Works Memorial at 11am this will be followed by the procession through the Town to the Memorial at Lever Park Avenue . On the 2nd of December will be the Lighting of the Civic Christmas Tree which heralds the start of the Christmas festivities . More details will be available later . The Mayoress and I have been delighted to receive a number of invitations to a wide range of events . We were pleased to be able to present prizes to the winners of the Horwich in Bloom Flower and produce show and to the winners of the Garden event Judged earlier in the Year . Very well done to all those who entered . Not everyone can win but all deserve recognition for taking part and improving the appearance of Horwich for us all . I especially want to acknowledge the efforts of the businesses around the town lots of whom put in significant effort to brightening the local scene and I look forward to a bigger and better event next year . In the space allowed I cannot give details of all that has gone on but should mention The fund raising efforts of Holy Trinity Church both in their Concert and Table Top sale to raise money for their chosen charity supporting people in Namibia and wish them well with their Shoe Box Collection for needy Children which is currently going on . Can I also thank Donna Payton and her friends who ( including a sponsored head shave ) have raised close to £ 2000 to support McMillan Nurses . It does prove what a small motivated group can achieve . Briefly can I also thank the organisers for our invitation to see ' Little Shop of Horrors ' in Westhoughton , for a very well performed and presented show . I wonder why we do not see more of Horwich ' s talent on display . Finally can I mention two events . The first by Boo Consulting and the second rather grander affair in aid of Bolton Hospice organised by Redmond Casey both very successful . Local businesses including retail , commercial , professional and industrial are the lifeblood our Town . It is easy to take them for granted but they are essential for the wellbeing of our Town and often depend on local people for support . If you look around town centres over the UK you can see what happens when that support is not there , with boarded up shop fronts and neglect everywhere . Our local centre seems to be doing ok but it will only remain so if we all continue to use it .
