Sustainable Harvesting
Through responsible land management and maintenance practices , our sourcing partner is actively involved in preserving and regenerating forested lands . They currently manage close to 13,000 acres of forested land for local landowners who have made a commitment to protect their land from being used for other purposes . In addition , the production of pure essential oil provides compensation , which incentivises forest preservation . Our partner has set a goal to increase sustainably managed forested land to 50,000 acres by 2025 .
The land management programme for Guaiacwood includes monitoring the harvest rate , which averages 2-3 trees per acre every 20 years . During harvesting , the roots of the tree are left intact for regeneration , a process also called coppicing , which can enhance the health and lifespan of the tree . As an added benefit , the regeneration process leads to the growth of new , young shoots that sequester ( absorb ) more carbon than older trees that have reached their limit of growth .
Only wood from the trunks or branches of these resilient trees is used for distillation , and leftover sawdust fuels a biomass boiler , further adding to our environmentally friendly process .
What is Guaiacwood ?
Guaiacwood trees grow in clusters , reaching a height of 18 m ( 59 ft ) at maturity . Due to an exceptionally high density level , one Guaiacwood log can burn throughout the night and even sink in water . These are not the only unique features of Guaiacwood . When first cut , due to the high oil content and exposure to the air , the wood turns a deep , rich blue colour before fading .
Producing Guaiacwood oil is a difficult , complicated process for several reasons . Distilling oil from the dense and resistant Guaiacwood requires a much finer grinding process than for a more porous wood . After distillation , if the essential oil is left at room temperature it becomes semi-solid . For this reason , dōTERRA Guaiacwood comes in a base of Fractionated Coconut Oil , creating a smooth and pourable consistency straight out of the bottle .
For centuries , Guaiacwood has been used in Native American wellness ceremonies and meditation practices for its grounding properties . Guaiacwood essential oil has a woody , smoky aroma with a touch of sweetness , and can be used to help promote a calming and tranquil atmosphere . This unique essential oil can help support the skin ’ s natural hydration and help to soothe minor skin irritations .
