e. Low power objective- The smallest of the objectives ;
multiplies the image 4 X; allows the person to see a large
number of cells but not much detail
f. High power objective – the second largest objective;
multiplies the image 10X; allows the person to see a smaller
number of cells but much more detail.
g. Stage- the flat part of the cell where the slide is placed
h. Stage clips- located on the stage; these hold the slide in
place
i. Diaphragm- located under the stage; regulates the amount
of light reaching the eyepiece
j. Coarse Adjustment Knob- moves the stage up and down
k. Fine Adjustment Knob- this is used to “ fine-tune” the
image after it is in focus ; brings the image into sharper
focus
l. Arm and Base- support structures that allow the
microscope to stand.
m. Slide- a piece of glass or plastic that hold the specimen that
is to be observed
n. Field of View- the area that you can see under the
microscope
2. How to focus a microscope
a. Plug in and turn on the microscope
b. Using the coarse adjustment knob move the stage all the
way UP
c. Place the slide on the stage and secure it with the stage
clips
d. Move the low power objective into place.
e. Look into the eyepiece and SLOWLY move the stage down
until the image comes into focus using the coarse
adjustment knob
f. Use the fine adjustment knob to bring the image into
sharper focus if necessary.
