The lights kept flashing, the smoke covered the air. The fragrance of a cheap perfume covered smell buds. He was stepping into the not so famous Red light area of the town. His choice of profession as a journalist, always offered him the road less travelled. Although this wasn’t his first visit to a red light area. The sultry, seductive women opening their arms to lecherous men, was a scene flashing in front of his eyes at every turn in the lane. He was called to interview “Dai Maa”, the most powerful brothel keeper or Madam as they called her in that area. A sleazy, power hungry, heartless sex slavery, is all he could imagine Dai Maa to be. But an hour long conversation with her changed his perception for lifetime.

“Welcome to Radisson Blue, how can I help you?” the receptionist beamed. “We have a suite booked under the name of Mrs. Sharma” said the lady. The receptionist chuckled looking at the 45 year old couple who were about to check-in in a honeymoon suite. “Newly married??” she giggled and asked. The silver line of wisdom on their respective hair spoke a different story.

“Yes!!! We renew our marriage every year, you see. We start all over again, from scratch and build our own love castle every year. So this is our 15th renewal and we would like to celebrate it in your hotel.” The receptionist could see a sparkle in that “forever young at heart “couple and handed them the key to their little heavenly abode. In a marriage span of 15 years, she made sure to write an interesting chapter with him into their book of love. She still believed in dressing up for him every once in a while.

Dai Maa – the name had Maa but she was not less than a father figure to all those kids growing up under her umbrella, who had no clue who their father was. She ensured good education to all those kids. She ensured physical and emotional safety to all those women who chose this dark profession. She educated them and made them aware about all the rights they owned as a female. She taught them to held their head high and embrace the womanhood they were blessed with. She taught all those women that you don’t need someone to fight for you; all you need is learning how to fight.

She challenged all those notions of the society which stated that you need to be educated to inspire, to empower. No background mattered when a woman decides to challenge the norms.

“From sword to Pen, she has picked up all;

From voices to opinions, she has given it all;

Fighting tooth and nail, she battles for her choices;

Fair over Unfair, she clears her preferences;”

He, like a perfect gentleman, would ask his lady love, out for a date. Their love making was no less than art. Not only did they touch their bodies but kissed each other’s soul. Their maturity would reflect in the passion they held for each other. They sat on each side of the see-saw of life and balanced it together, against all odds, with utmost grace. And oh boy!! It was a treat when they laughed to live, and lived to laugh, forever
