GRAHAM FELTON - DIGITAL ART
ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
“The piece that won my ticket to state is called “Formation”
which relates back to the fact that the cubes you see form a
face that is abstracted to give the viewer a chance to decide
what they think the image represents, as there are no wrong
answers when it comes to opinions. I created this piece in
Maxon’s Cinema 4d R14. My process involved taking a
royalty free generic bust of a female head that I was able to
mess around with. Before I did anything extremely fancy
with it I had to tone the subdivisions of the model down to
better sharpen the edges and distort the image. Also, low
poly models are processed faster as they require less
memory to display and manipulate. Once the subdivisions
were brought down, I copied the face so I could have two of
them. One would be a ‘host’ for the cubes to be cloned upon
and structure the form of the image better. The second would
allow the software to make the tubes (known as wireframe),
that you see above, and create the model from them. Once
the cubes were cloned on, I had a bust with a wireframe
structure and a lot of cubes into neat rows being generated.
This was not my goal, so I applied a Linear XYZ Shader to
both systems to make sure the amount of clones present
would be less and concentrated on the right. This gave the
piece a lot of movement as it was being constructed. ………...
