Elijah looked at her confused. No one had ever invited him out to eat anywhere. He wasn’t sure what to say. Lydia looked at him and spoke. “I won’t take no for an answer Elijah. So you better say yes.” Elijah didn’t know what to say. He didn’t have the nerve to say no. “Ok” “ Alright I’ll pick you up tomorrow Elijah. How’s that sound? “ “Great… it sounds great.” Lydia pulled out a pen and a notepad from her purse. “ Ok here is my number call me tomorrow morning so that I know where to pick you up.” Then with that everyone had said there goodbyes and Elijah had gone home. The next day Elijah woke up extra early because he was nervous. He still wasn’t sure whether or not he should go. He looked at the cross above his head and then at the picture of his mother next to his bed. Then somehow he knew. He would go but first he went brushed his teeth, washed his face, and even put on some deodorant. It wasn’t much but it was more than he’d done in years. Before stepping out the door Elijah looked himself in the mirror and smiled. Elijah went out to the nearest pay phone and called Lydia. She had a huge smile on her face when she saw him. 102
