The one thing that kept him going was his religious faith. He was able to continue living because he felt that maybe his life would one day take a turn for the better. Elijah practiced prayer every night before bed. It was a habit his mother had engraved into his head from a young age. He prayed every night to God for a friend. He’d ball his eyes out in the solitude of his apartment. He’d hope god would give him a friend but his prayers went unanswered for years. On the morning of September 1st unbeknownst to Elijah his life would change. Elijah woke up put on his favorite pair of boots, got on his black trench coat, and walked down the stairs of his apartment to go throw away the trash. He walked out the front door of his apartment complex something he hated doing because of how busy the New York streets were. Elijah quickly tossed his trash into the dumpster and hurried back into the apartment complex. He was about to enter the building when suddenly from the corner of his eye he saw an old lady struggling with grocery bags. As much as he was afraid of talking to people he knew that he had to go help. Its what his mother taught him. Elijah walked over to the older woman and greeted her. She looked up at him with a big smile and said “Hello there young man. How can I help you?” “Oh well actually I came here to help you mam. I noticed you seem to be struggling with all those bags.” Elijah smiled and looked at her. 98
