A Visit from George Dennehy
Born in Romania without arms, George
Dennehy was immediately placed into an orphanage at birth and was treated for his first two years of life as though he were an outcast. At the age of two, he was adopted into his “forever family” that since expanded to include 13 children (many of whom are also adopted and have special needs). Interestingly, George attended The Cornerstone Christian School in 2004 as he entered the fifth grade, and he continued to attend through the sixth grade (with classmates who graduated from the Class of 2012). His family then relocated to Virginia where George still lives, along with his wife and 7-year-old son.
George’s aunt, Mrs. Sue Owens, who used to be our Kindergarten teacher, worked with the CCS administration to try to have George visit Cornerstone with the message God has given him in April 2020. Due to COVID, those plans had to be abandoned. When we tried to reschedule in the spring of 2021, travel restrictions related to COVID required us to postpone once again. We almost had to reschedule again at the last minute (also due to COVID) but were delighted to finally have George visit us on Monday, 10/25.
George spoke with our middle/high school students first thing in the morning, and then he met with our elementary students afterwards. His inspiring message focused on the hope of Christ during the darkest times of life, and the power of God’s love to help us through everything we will ever face. He reminded us of the importance of reaching out to people who are different than we are and to remember that we each have a built-in desire to belong and feel loved. We must always remember that about ourselves and about those around us. As a musician and songwriter, George also led us in worship and shared some of his original songs with us while skillfully playing the guitar...with his feet! He also encouraged students to ask questions of him before concluding both sessions.
