Middle School Spiritual Emphasis Week

Submitted by Mrs. Sheri Hattin

During the week of March 14-18, the middle school was blessed by a visit from Coastlands Consultants, an organization that collaborates with Christian schools throughout the Northeast to transform students through interactive chapels and by building relationships. This year’s team included

Mr. Matt Huffman, Dr. Pam Brady, and two student helpers. Throughout the week, Dr. Brady shared object lessons that challenged us to be a steady light for the Lord. We were also encouraged to let down any facades that we may find ourselves wearing and to be real with the Lord. CCS parent Brian Sullivan led us in a time of worship, and

Mr. Huffman shared messages from the book of

2 Timothy. Mr. Huffman emphasized that the Bible

is not just “black words on a white page,” but the Bible has authority. He cautioned against people who want to “spice up” the Word of God by twisting it to say what others’ “itching ears want to hear.”

Along with daily messages, the students also had

the opportunity to have a “coffee-can session” at each of their grade levels. During this time, students could anonymously ask any question they had.

This was a great time where some difficult and personally relevant topics were able to be discussed in light of God’s Word.

The Coastlands team also spent time building relationships with the middle school students while joining in on their gym classes and stretch breaks.  On Wednesday, the middle school boys were invited

by Coastlands to leave campus with Mr. Huffman after school to enjoy pizza together at Vic’s Pizza. The middle school girls had a similar opportunity and were able to walk to 7-Eleven to buy some treats and enjoy time together with Dr. Brady.

The week was refreshing while allowing us to intentionally shift our focus back to the Lord.

During Middle School Spiritual Emphasis, I learned to try to be a good aroma for the Lord and not a bad one.” -          Leylani, Grade 6

My favorite part of spiritual emphasis week was coffee-can [time], because we got to hear and share different perspectives.” -          JoAna, Grade 7

My favorite part was journaling with someone else, because it provided me with someone I could talk to personally about what to do and how to get closer to God.” - Katie, Grade 8

Mae Howard, CCS sophomore, has been accepted to a Materials Engineering summer scholar program at Clemson University in South Carolina.  Mae will spend time working in the Electron Microscope Facility on campus, the nation’s top electron microscope facility.  The program will focus on the use of electron microscopy using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy

(TEM), and X-Ray Photoelectron Microscopy (XPS).  Mae will

learn the necessary skills of these

high-powered microscopes to learn

atomic level information of various

materials used in engineering and

biology.  Not only is this an exciting

opportunity for Mae, but she will be

learning at the alma mater of our

High School Science Teacher, Mr.

Keith Press.  Go, Tigers!
