quickly as we ’ re picking up data for ribeye area , carcass weight , yield grade , marbling and back fat , and you can use that in combination with your ultrasound data .
“ For breed associations , it ’ s very rare to have members with enough numbers and the ability to feed out their own cattle , and then have the ability to track parentage of both sires and dams ,” Anderson adds . “ Most folks that are raising commercial bulls to sell , those bulls go out and breed cows but unless they can track those feeder cattle and have parentage markers on sires and dams , you can ’ t put the data together .”
He explains the accuracy values on bulls represented in this collaboration can jump by 0.20 to 0.30 right away . So , if their accuracy started at 0.40 to 0.50 , that means it jumps up to 0.70 to 0.80 . Compared to depending solely on ultrasound data , that ’ s a big deal for sorting desirable sires out at a faster pace .
“ Feedlot Health has been very critical in getting the data set put together , along with IGS and Dr . Weaber ,” Anderson explains . IGS , or
International Genetic Solutions , is the multi-breed genetic evaluation collaborating with several breed association partners , including NALF , to enhance beef industry profitability .
“ Probably two years ago , with their help , we ran heritabilities so we could be very comfortable we had the breed effects sorted out in this data set , particularly with Holstein and Jersey ,” Anderson says . “ The other thing this collaboration has done is encourage more breeders to start tracking bulls out onto the ranches where they ’ re selling their feeder cattle . We have a fair amount of cattle breeders that are also cattle feeders , so it ’ s starting to multiply .
“ For me , it ’ s just a leap forward that closes the gap on tracking accuracies for carcass traits in a real-world feedyard environment ,” he adds . “ We ’ re feeding cattle to larger outweights now than we were three or five years ago . We ’ ve got more representative data for actual days on feed and these larger slaughter weights . That , along with feed
