Is it your main profession?
Yep, always has been. I’ve never had a “proper job” but somehow I’ve managed to put some form of shoe on my children’s feet! Every penny we ever earned was made by my hands…. but I couldn’t do it without a Hannah to organise me…and occasionally she will throw some food into the workshop!
What was your route into sculpture and why?
Nobody ever told me I shouldn’t make something. Actually, that is a lie. An art teacher, at the age of 14, told me I couldn’t make a clay tree ... so I proved her wrong. It was probably at that point I realized I would have to teach myself anything that I wanted to know.
What was your first job as a sculptor?
Can't remember. Too long ago. My first ever bigger than normal commission was for two nine-foot tall hand forged steel candle trees to go either side of a door way. Each one had 10 candles which dripped over the branches like stalactites, and subtly grew towards the light coming from the windows. Although they had no leaves the delicate canopy exuded dormant life; soon it will be spring!
