My Life as a Sculptor

An Interview with Mark Reed

In the second of a series of interviews, we talk to Mark Reed, professional sculptor about his life as a sculptor.

The Serving Ace Tree at the AELTC Wimbledon, wave upon wave of fish in Norwich Cathedral……just two of Mark’s works which have made the international press in recent years.  So, what does it take to make monumental works in such monumental places…and where did it all begin?  Here are Mark’s thoughts on his sculptural life to date!

How long have you been sculpting?

Since I was about 9 years old when my parents let me build a workshop in the back of the garage.  There was one rule…no mains electricity... so I stole a  car battery  and made my own lighting from a  car spotlight and began making things: a bird table that looked like King Ludwig’s castle out of old pallets and old door hinges.  Over 40 years later, I'm casting my own 1.6 tonne bronze trees out of an old barrel furnace I made …. but, this time, I am allowed electricity in the shed I built!
