My Life Cast in Resin

An Interview with Carol Orwin

In the first of a series of interviews, we talk to Carol, professional sculptor and long-standing member of the SSS, about her life as a sculptor.

We are talking about the itinerary for a photographic trip to Iceland.  “Photography was my second subject at Art School,” says Carol when I ask her about this other obvious artistic skill in her armoury, “but once I started my Foundation Course, I realised it was going to be sculpture all the way.”

Carol Orwin was one of the first 100 members of the Surrey Sculpture Society and, coming up to the 30th anniversary of our incorporation, it is wonderful to be able to amble through what Carol’s life as a sculptor has been like over those years and find out a bit more about what led her down this career path.

How long have you been sculpting?

"Well…I went to Art School at 17.  I had done Science A Levels and thought I wanted to be a vet but realised drawing and modelling animals was more of a passion than potentially operating on them so I went off to do a Foundation Course and I’ve been sculpting ever since."
