“Little did I realize that sculpture commissions were like buses; you don't get any for ages and then three come along at once”.  So said, SSS Artist, Christine Charlesworth, who has over the past year completed not just one, but three major commissions of prominent female figures from recent history.

The first to be unveiled earlier in the year was a sculpture of Greta Thunberg, commissioned by Winchester University.  This was the first ever sculpture of the young environmental activist and proved to be a controversial subject, attracting global press coverage from Australia to Sweden, from the UK to the USA and Canada.

Next up….Christine’s portrayal of Emily Wilding Davison, the famous suffragette. This was covered in a recent YouTube series in which the Emily Davison Memorial Project shared videos of Christine’s work from armature to foundry. The sculpture was unveiled in Epsom on 8th June this year.

And finally....Dame Ethel Smyth, composer, writer and another prominent suffragette, a sculpture destined for Woking town centre.
