BEGINNING PAINTING (5 OR 10 WEEKS) Experience mixing colors, determining the best type of brush to use and techniques for working with paint. This class is ideal for those who have taken First-Time Drawing into Painting or have previous experience and want to expand their skills. Students will focus on the continued development of painting techniques as they investigate the importance of a color plan in painting. Brush and pallet knife use and the incorporation of painting mediums are explored. Prerequisite: First-Time Drawing into Painting or prior experience. Tuesday 6:30-9:30pm Annie York Session II: Starts February 17 $175, Members $170 INTRODUCTION TO WATERCOLOR (5 WEEKS) Learn the fundamentals of working with watercolors in this introductory class. Each lesson will focus on basic watercolor techniques. Brush use, value shape, composition, color mixing and layering will be discussed. Students should have basic skills in painting and drawing. Watercolor kit and additional materials available for purchase. Tuesday 6:30-9:30pm Students will be introduced to techniques necessary to accurately render botanical subjects using graphite and watercolor. We will keep a sketchbook to record details and test techniques, then apply those skills to more considered and developed pieces. Some class periods will be spent at local conservatories practicing our artistry in the field. Monday 10am-1pm New students will learn the fundamentals of oil painting, as more experienced painters continue to develop and refine their skills. Experiment with color mixing and painting techniques that accumulate to enhance skill and provide a foundation for confident painting with oils. This technical drawing class teaches methods on rendering the animal form and improving observational drawing skills. We will begin by drawing mounted specimens and graduate to drawing from live animals at Lincoln Park Zoo. Thursday 10am-1pm Amanda Mulcahy Session I: Starts January 15 Session II: Starts February 19 $175, Members $170 Focus is placed on human anatomy. Each week the class will begin with drawing from a live model, focusing on a different part of the body, beginning with the head and shoulders down to the feet. This class is specifically designed for the illustrator or cartoonist to build skills and understanding how to simplify the human form. (5 WEEKS) This beginning/intermediate-level class teaches the fundamentals of drawing portraits and figures while working from a nude model. Weekly demonstrations and structured exercises will emphasize observation, proportion, measuring, anatomy, and seeing the figure and face as simply a matter of integrated shapes. Students will work in charcoal and conté and must supply their own materials. A materials list is available online. (5 WEEKS) CREATE YOUR OWN COMIC (5 WEEKS) OIL PAINTING (5 WEEKS) Pastels have been a favorite drawing material of many 19th and 20th century artists, from Degas to O’Keefe to Lucian Freud, because of their quick application and intense colors. We will learn the basics of working with pastels, the perfect medium for creating quick sketches or developing more complex drawings. A supply list will be provided on the first day of class.
