Meet Herbert the Dragon
You’ ll hear a lot about squirrels at Keele – we even use them in our marketing – but did you know that Keele’ s official mascot is actually a dragon?
Introducing … Herbert!
Herbert arrived at Keele Hall’ s Flower Court from Italy as part of a fountain in 1903. He ended up in a rubbish heap during the Second World War and was rescued and restored to his former glory in 1951 by Ron and Mairwen Evans.
Herbert was a feature at many student events, taking part in events for Rag Week and Carnival parades, riding around Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stoke-on-Trent on the back of a truck to thousands of cheers. He was even a prize for the winners of the annual raft race.
After all these adventures, Herbert now resides peacefully in the Library’ s atrium area in his Dragon’ s Den where he has been since 2011. Make sure you say hello when you’ re in the building. He’ ll be happy to see you!
