Using Mechanical Aids
There are many aids available to assist with manual handling tasks.
By using an appropriate aid the task can be made easier and safer.
You should always consider the use of a mechanical aid when
assessing or undertaking a moving and handling Operation.
Mechanical aids reduce physical effort, making moving and
handling easier and safer. Before using any mechanical aid there
are certain checks that must be made:
?Select the right equipment to complete the task
?Do not operate any equipment if you are not trained to use it
?Keep the equipment in good operating condition
?Has a risk assessment for using this equipment for this purpose
and in this situation been carried out?
?What is the total load that the equipment is capable of lifting or
carrying? There should be a manufacturer’s plate with this
information on it
