Caedmon’s Hymn: According to Hammer (2015), “the earliest Old English poem Caedmon was a monk who is allegedly responsible for over 3000-verse biblical poem about the Genesis, including Caedmon’s Hymn. He actually put into the written word oral fragments, and also added some Christian events to the poems to sort of leave out the pagan tradition (Greenfield & Calder, 1986). Here is a verse of the poem:

Now we ought to praise the Guardian of the heavenly kingdom,

The might of the Creator and his conception,

The work of the glorious Father, as he of each of the wonders,

Eternal Lord, established the beginning.

He first created for the sons of men

Heaven as a roof, holy Creator;

Then the middle-earth, the Guardian of mankind,

The eternal Lord, afterwards made

The earth for men, the Lord almighty.
