chemical bonds

Chemical substances that are held together by attraction of atoms is called a chemical bond. This is achieved by sharing atoms and exchanging electrons.

Strong chemical bonds are commonly found in solid metals, molecules, and crystals. These bonds have ordered structures.

Then weak bonds occur because of polarity effects or the lack of it.

When two or more atoms chemically bond they form a compound.

Gilbert Newton Lewis observed atoms and noticed that many elements are most stable when they contain eight electrons in their valence shell.

Although Lewis wasn't always right, thanks to him we have the basis of what we know of chemical bonding. Today we know two main types of chemical bonding; ionic bonding and covalent bonding which we will see later.
