NEW LIFE ON JAMES P: WERE YOU READY?

New Feelings

Every young adult anticipates that day when they no longer have to live under their parent’s roof and abide by their rules, but is every young adult mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared for that day? Living on a college campus may very well be that determining factor. Normally students won’t converse with others about this feeling, but an enormous amount of college freshman experience being homesick during the first months away from home. “My mom never knew I that when I didn’t call home every day I was helping to minimize my anxiety about being away, because I never told her, I was afraid she would maybe think I made the wrong decision about going to college and I might not have been ready.”, Kawani Wimbly, first time freshman of Clark Atlanta University. Having the freedom of being away from home off in college can spark a bucket of emotions a young teenager might not have even known existed. For example, they can simply become depressed because they miss having the luxury of that clean, white tub/shower combination installment at home, where as in school they are only provided with that dirt old shower stall that has been there since the founding of the school, and we can’t forget the time limit they are given to ensure other people always have a chance to shower before they head to class.

New People

First time college freshman have to change abruptly their accustomed way of living, from adjusting living with homesickness to living without any type of privacy. A recently interviewed student of Clark Atlanta University, R. Cummings, expressed the minor adjustments she had to endure, “I’ve learned patience, because without patience, my residency on campus would be an awful one.” Cummings explained how living with someone else was not something that she was too fond of and how she learned quickly to compromise or to just simply ignore certain comments and actions. Many altercations happen between students and their roommates, because becoming adapt to some else’s living habits is not an easy task.
