Steve’s legacy set to live on in Leek with
a ‘Party for the People’
he legacy of a renowned former Leek councillor,
businessman and community campaigner who
tragically lost his battle with cancer back in 2011
will live on with one of the biggest events ever
staged in the town set to take place in his memory.
It was one of the dying wishes of former Town
Mayor and Oatcake shop owner Steve Povey that the
town he loved and served stage an event, the likes
of which Leek has not seen before - leaving in his
will a generous sum of money in order to stage the
celebration.

Council’s Events Committee, which Steve was
previously Chairman of, the idea of a Country and
Western Weekend was born. Speaking to Leek Life

Current Chairman Councillor Barry Cowie said:
“This is the biggest event Leek has seen in many
years and I have to thank Leek Town Council
Events Committee and our Town Clerk for all their
hard work over many months – also a special
thanks to Julie Pointon and Harold Critchlow for
their expertise in the field of Country and Western.”
Set to take place this summer over the weekend
of Saturday and Sunday 21st and 22nd June,
organisers are confident the Country and Western
Weekend will be a fitting tribute to Steve.
Momentum for the event is already gathering
pace with a jam-packed and varied programme of
