DEN ENGLE p their Leeks for Brussels... he question “why Leek?” Is one asked all too frequently by new customers to Geoff and Hilary Turner’s Belgian inspired bar that can be found in the heart of Leek town centre. And the answer is a simple one; a passion for Belgium, its beer and cuisine was what prompted the Moorlands couple to open their own little piece of Belgium in Leek back in 1996. Over the years owners Geoff and Hilary, whilst delighting customers with their selection of over 100 different Belgian beers at their bar Den Engle, have tried to explain what first attracted them to spend their holidays in various regions of the small European country, finally giving into public demand by their regulars to organise a trip to Belgium which took place back in December last year. To give some background to one of the planned excursions on the trip, the group paid a visit to Leek’s very own Nicholson War Memorial ahead of the 36 strong Bruges bound party departing from Leek on 6th December. Speaking to Leek Life about the trip Hilary explained: “We arrived Friday afternoon to check into our hotel in the centre of Bruges leaving the remainder of the day free to explore the various bars and restaurants.
