SCOUTING IN THE MOORLANDS

very experienced scout Duke of Edinburgh Award
assessor and county secretary for Gwent as well as
holding many other ACC roles. He said that it had
been easy to assess them, an absolute pleasure and
that their level of training was evident.
All of the five forementioned are members of
the Moorlands Scout Network, a group of likeminded young members of the Scout association
who form groups to do shared activities and
progress their skills such as climbing, canoeing,
etc.
Celebrating more success the Network’s
Canoeing group recently completed their BCU 2
star award. They meet as appropriate to members,
depending on what they want to be involved in;
with plans in the pipeline to meet every month on
the third Monday night from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
Congratulations have also gone out to a group
of Loki explorers for completeing their bronze
expedition challenge for the D of E. An overnight
camp with two day hike ensured the group
fulfilled this section of the award, after planning
and partaking in their practise weekend earlier in
the year. Harry Corden, Jacob Simpson, Billy
Ship, George Wheel, Tiffany Jenkinson , Oliver
Brown and John Booth have completed this with
the help and support of their leaders.
Earlier in the year members of the local scouts
were in attendance at ‘Play Day’, a fun event for
young people held at Brough Park. Explorers and
leaders were biscuit decorating and partnered up
with Stanley Head to support the climbing and
archery sections. This attracted much attention as
did similar activities at Cheddleton Carnival.
Explore rs and leaders did biscuit making for the
beaver cub ages and also made and fired catapult
sling shots for the scouts and explorer age ranges.
These promotional activities lead to many
interested people making enquiries about the
explorers, beavers, cubs and scouts and was a
great way of showing the community and other
young people what the groups do and how much
fun there is to be had by joining one. For any
further information about the various Moorlands
Scout groups check out the website
www.moorlandsscouts.org.
As well as the groups themselves many people
may not be aware of a fabulous local facility run
by the Moorland’s Scouting Movement for many
years. Consall Scout Camp was established way
back in 1953 and is open not just to scouts but
to guides and educational and community
