Emmeline Pankhurst was born in 1858. Shewas an activist who organized a campaign for theright to vote in elections for women. In 1903, shefounded the Women’s Social and Political Union. Until May 12 nd 1905,her actions were pacifist but at some point shewent out into the streets and destroyed publicfurniture. She was imprisoned three timesbecause of her actions (once because of a leafletshe made telling people to rush the House ofCommons).

Emmeline Pankhurst addresses a crowd in New York City in 1913

«Men make the moral code and they expect women to accept it. They have decided that it is entirely right and proper for men to fight for theirliberties and their rights, but that it is not right and proper for women to fightfor theirs.» Emmeline Pankhurst

She encouraged women to take part in the World War I. They started filling factories inorder to free up men who could fight and join in the war. Because of her and women’sefforts during war time, and because she created the Women’s Social and Political Union, they were granted limited voting right by the Parliament in 1918.

Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst is arrested outside Buckingham Palace in England in 1914.

In our opinion , she was a very heroic and charismatic personality. The fact that she did all of this despite her husband’s death, which takes a lot of time to recover from, makes her inspiring in a way.She showed everyone that women were just as important and as strong as men.We also love that even in jail, she didn’t get discouraged and carried on protesting.
