EXCURSION TO "SOSNA" ECO-CENTRE

On the third day, we visited the Ecological educational centre SOSNA which serves as a functional

example of ecological, healthy, low-energy and low-budget building with natural garden.

While one group attended a lecture by Mr Szabo who tries to raise awareness of the fact that, in this Era, Man shapes the planet with more impact than geological forces, another group was taking a tour of the garden with Mrs. Silvia Szabo showing the techniques used to obtain a sustainable garden and live an environmentally friendly life.

In his lecture, Mr. Szabo sought to alert us to the danger of positive feedbacks created by Man that lead to imbalance on the planet. For example, if pollution leads to an increase in temperature, the ice caps

melt. If the ice melts, it decreases the white area on the planet that reflects heat back into space and therefore gets even more heat in the atmosphere, melting even more ice. So we were given a challenge: Don´t buy everything, you already have everything! We have to reduce our consumption and avoid waste so we can reduce the pollution that seriously endangers our planet.

Moving from theory to practice, Ms. Szabo showed us practical examples of how we can build a house and garden with little impact on the environment. She showed us a solar dryer (built with used windows and pieces of old furniture) and a lake with an artificial floating island that allows the protection of aquatic life. We also entered a beautiful Hobbit house built with clay, straw and recycled materials and covered with earth and plants for thermal insulation with reduced impact on the environment.

So, don’t forget: You already have everything, reduce your carbon footprint!
