E-Waste Environmental Impact

Roughly 40 million tons of E-Waste is produced globally each year. Have you ever wondered how this effects the environment? Well first off, let’s talk about where E-Waste goes. One of the places E-Waste is shipped to is Guiyu, a City in southern China. Guiyu is the biggest E-Waste recycling facility in the world. The people in Guiyu recycle by taking recyclable metals out of electronics, and burning what they don’t need. They then use an acid bath to dissolve lead and other metals in order to get to the gold and silver which are recyclable. The rest of these metals usually make their way into rivers or stream. This affects Guiyu’s water greatly. Lead can get into the water, and can poison people in Guiyu. It already has made the river Lianjiang a lifeless river. This river flows through the center of Guiyu collecting all the poisons.
