Debra Lyda
Sr. Director, Home- Based Services
Unity Health System
Shared Governance Program
1
How would you describe your Action Learning Project and the difference you hope it will make to
advance your organization’s mission (or the field) and benefit the individuals you serve?
Develop a shared governance program within home-based services to further interdisciplinary teamwork and staff development/
career ladder, especially related to changes in system due to merger with another health system.
2
How have the relationships you’ve developed as part of your project (with mentors, partners,
stakeholders, etc.) influenced this direction and you as a leader?
Understanding the importance of good communication and transparency has been emphasized by sr. leadership. Clarification of values
within a system is important in development of staff and reduction in anxiety and miscommunications.
3
What have been important turning points for you, in your own learning, as you’ve engaged with
the action learning process (you might consider a surprise, insight, setback, or challenge)?
Learning communication skills: active listening, softball questions, pregnant pauses has allowed me to receive more feedback, more
open and honest communication/interaction with staff.
4
How do you hope your project might unfold in the months and years ahead and what impact do
you hope it will have on the field at large?
My hope is that every staff member feels like an integral part of the success of the agency, that their ideas are valuable and
implemented. Resultant confidence will build steadily to provide the next leaders to our division/system.
5
How has the action learning process in the context of the Leadership Academy experience
contributed to your growth as a leader?
This experience has helped me look at issues from all sides, not just operationally. The upcoming changes for my health system as well
as healthcare industry in general, needs to be handled by leaders who are willing to learn, grow and change. The leadership academy
has provided me with the toolbox to succeed.
