our political views and stand firm in our Christian convictions to make sure we are not succumbing to uncritical partisan alignment .
If our identity is first and firmly located in Jesus Christ , then we should be able to participate in party politics without succumbing to the temptation to build our identity around partisanship . This requires intentionality and yielding our whole selves — even our psychological wiring — to the transformation of the Holy Spirit . We must intentionally cultivate dispositions that resist the social forces bending us toward uncritical partisan alignment . Jesus gives us our identity : “ you are the salt of the earth .” He also gives us a warning : if we fail to be salt , we are “ thrown out and trampled under foot ” ( Matthew 5:13 ).
So we will keep the salt handy as we consider the approaches to Christian citizenship in the Kingdom and the country .
