We often think of the devil as a liar . And he is . Jesus referred to him as “ the father of lies ” ( John 8:44 ). But let ’ s not be naïve . The enemy has been honing his skills since the beginning of time . Even back in the Garden of Eden , though fairly new on the job , he was crafty enough to convince the first couple to disobey God .
You see , it is the enemy ’ s goal to convince you of a lie for a damaging purpose . But to craft a lie , he starts with truth . He has to . It would be too obvious if he came out and said something like , “ You ’ re going to fail ,” with nothing to back it up . So he builds his case for why you are going to fail using real evidence from your past and present .
The apostle Paul gives us insight into the devil ’ s strategy . Writing about how to engage in battle against the enemy ’ s efforts in our minds , Paul instructs , “ We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God , and take every thought captive to obey Christ ” ( 2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV ).
