Act Like A Man
J . Josh Smith
There is one overarching quality every man must cultivate . All other qualities flow from this one . It is so significant , that in Paul ’ s list of qualifications for Titus , he mentions it twice . In a word , it is blameless .
Some versions translate this word as “ above reproach ,” which might be a more helpful translation . The word does not mean “ without blemish ”; it means “ without blame .” We will only be without blemish when Christ completes His work in us and makes our salvation complete after death ( Eph . 1:4 ; Col . 1:22 ).
To be blameless means to be a man of unquestionable integrity . It means you are not open to public attack or criticism . As has often been said , it means you are a man in whom no loophole for criticism can be found . It means you are a man who is a worthy model for other believers . It means you are the man in private whom you appear to be in public .
There are two primary areas in which we must seek to be blameless : at home and in the community .
Without any hesitation , Paul moves from the quality of blamelessness to a man ’ s life at home . The probing question becomes , “ Could your family share things about your life that would damage your reputation and disqualify you from leadership ?”
This is when you kind of want to tell Paul to mind his own business .
