Our anger is often rooted in some physiological need to protect ourselves , and it takes some effort to dig in and understand what we are angry about .
Most of the time , we can ’ t even say what we need because our focus is on the needs of others . And it ’ s been so long since we thought about our own needs that we are completely out of touch with them .
Understanding your emotions allows you to identify your unmet needs , which often cause anger . Having grace for yourself and staying curious about your emotions in a nonjudgemental way allows you to develop a healthy way to manage anger .
We ’ ve established that anger isn ’ t something to feel shame about . Good moms can and do get angry . Mad isn ’ t bad . Now let ’ s tackle what to do with our anger when it pops up .
When my kids were all young , there were years I felt some degree of anger for a good part of my waking hours . After the birth of my second son , I had postpartum depression and took a low-dose antidepressant . Years later , my doctor and I decided it was time to wean myself off the medication . Sure enough , I didn ’ t seem to be depressed anymore , but I noticed I got mad and yelled a lot more .
