Mike explained the problem . He gave a quick overview of the steady and mounting criticism over the past two years . And he admitted he was weary , even thinking at times about leaving the church .
When Mike was done , Marcus stared at him for a few seconds , but it seemed like several minutes to Mike .
Finally , Marcus spoke . “ Mike ,” he began . “ I have to admit I ’ m stunned . You have every right to feel hurt and weary . But I ’ m stunned because I had no idea this stuff was going on . I felt like I had my ear to the ground about our church , but I totally missed this one .” Marcus paused for a minute and then continued , “ I wonder how many pastors have situations like yours , where most of the members have no idea of the hurt their pastors are absorbing .” He reflected further , “ Members who love their pastors can ’ t help if they don ’ t know there is a problem . We have to get to work on this issue .”
Praying for My Pastor
Lord , please give my pastor the strength to endure the criticism he receives . When the barbs seem unending , give him a gentle reminder that you are there for him .
In the midst of the criticism , give him both perspective and focus . Give him the perspective that far more members are for him than against him . Give him the focus to move forward on the things that really matter .
And , God , I ask you to mobilize and motivate us members to better support our pastor . He already has a group of critics . Raise up an army of defenders and encouragers .
Finally , work in the hearts of the critics . Convict them of a critical spirit where necessary , and open their eyes to all that our pastor does for them and our church . When they do offer feedback , may it be from a posture of love and brokenness . May they address issues of major
