hearts, then to convince heads, and only then
to give direction to the hands of those who
actually do the work. When Steve Jobs walked
on stage in his black turtleneck and jeans, he
inspired his employees with a fresh vision of
the future and he explained how new products
would revolutionize people’s lives. When
they walked out of the auditorium, they were
eager to play their specific roles in making the
revolution in technology come true.
People who work with inspiring leaders and
in inspiring environments are sometimes
motivated to start their own businesses. Many
of the executives at Apple, Facebook, and
Microsoft had experiences that gave them
confidence to leave and start innovative,
successful companies. In my career before
January 1, 2004, I received a predictable salary.
Organizations paid me to serve as a janitor,
youth pastor, pastor, and college president.
Since that day, I’ve had to take responsibility
to earn money for my family and the people
who work for me without being dependent on
any organization. I wouldn’t have been able
to do this unless I’d been around inspiring
leaders and the environments they created.
They gave me the courage to step out of the
comfortable environment of a predictable
income into an uncomfortable environment of
an unpredictable income.
The questions I ask myself each day are:
• Who is farther down the road to success
because of my input?
• Who has more confidence to try something
new?
• Who has a new opportunity that I’ve helped
them see?
The law of sowing and reaping works here:
We reap what we sow, we reap after we sow,
and we reap more than we sow. When we
sow opportunities for others, we’ll get many
opportunities for ourselves.
