4. Fit

A well-fitting garment will seamlessly drape and provide a natural structure to the contours of your body. When investing in a custom suit, ensure the following:

a) The jacket shoulder ends at the intersection of your shoulder plane and arm.

b) When buttoning your jacket, you should not see an X across the chest.

c) The jacket back-length should end halfway down the buttock.

d) The jacket sleeve length should end just after the wrist bone

e) The pant fit does not limit your mobility when walking or running.

f) The pant length should end at the top of the show.

3. Colours, Patterns & Fabrics

When it comes to colour – avoid black at all costs while at work. When it comes to patterns in a professional setting, choose something subtle that compliments your body. If you’re short and stalky – select a vertical pattern such as herringbone to elongate the torso. If you’re tall and lanky – consider a light plaid to create the illusion of greater width. As for fabric, aim to select a suit that is as close to a 100% wool composition for a business formal setting. A cotton suit will provide a softer and more relaxed look and is appropriate for business-casual. Polyester may be able to imitate the appearance of a wool suit (from a distance) but its synthetic composition will appear evident and will conserve heat and maximize perspiration – you don’t want that.
