John Cullen Lighting mounted up/down lights, whilst the external dining table glows with storm lanterns and spiked Kew uplights to the tree. The tree is further enhanced by hanging Starliters, a light source similar in appearance to a bird feeder, that gently move and twinkle in soft winds, creating an almost magical effect. Of course, gardens can come in all shapes and sizes. Here this country retreat is bathed with wide washes of light, draw ing you home. And instead of lighting the drive surface with bollard like fittings, instead the trees themselves have become guiding points. Uplighting has helped enhance their natural and almost architectural beauty at night– a view to be enjoyed from the house too. Consider picking out focal points throughout your garden. Here cleverly placed spiked lights lead you along the box balls to the dramatically uplight urn at the end of the view. Around the garden itself, lighting can help create frames to view and vistas. This elevated sculpture is cross lit using two 1w Kew spotlights whilst the perimeter of the garden is lit with a combination of Kews and Hampton flood lights to both frame the space and create the view to the end of the garden. Whether extending the feeling of space from the inside or creating another room to enjoy throughout the year, garden lighting enhances the space for the client and adds another dimension to the design of the garden. www.johncullenlighting.com Landscape & Urban Design 65
