MONTH IN REVIEW This scheme shows how we can unlock the potential of an underused site to build more of the genuinely affordable homes Londoners so urgently need.” Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London LANDSCAPE PROJECT OOBE APPOINTED FOR SHEFFIELD PARK HILL REGENERATION Landscape Architects OOBE has been appointed to provide plans for the regeneration of Sheffield’s Park Hill Flats. OOBE has been commissioned by Alumno Developments to be landscape architects for the phase which will see the seven-hectare estate containing 1,000 flats redesigned. The firm said it is designing a landscape that turns an “overrun and unsafe environment” into an outdoor space that will reflect the architectural functions within the building. The lower level spaces will be designed to provide a range of areas for outdoor socialising, dining and study, as well as potential commercial break-out space adjacent to the commercial zone within the building. Sophie Tombleson, one of the team’s talented senior landscape architects working on the project, said: “I’m extremely privileged to be involved in this project, the history and story behind it has provided fantastic inspiration in the landscape design. The outdoor space is designed to provide a range of areas that accommodate residents and visitors, from outdoor study to lawns for informal sports. “Our design celebrates the heritage and iconic design of the original Le Corbusier-inspired building by retaining and revealing existing architectural features within the landscape, including imposing concrete retaining walls, ramps, and sunken gardens.” 14 Landscape Insight | September 2018 LANDSCAPE PROJECT LANDSCAPE PROJECT MAYOR USES ‘FULL STRENGTH’ TO APPROVE LANDSCAPE PROJECT FOR 400 NEW HOMES PLANS SUBMITTED FOR TOTTENHAM HALE PROJECT FEATURING DESIGN BY GRANT ASSOCIATES The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has approved a major landscape project which will deliver “hundreds of new homes” in Brentford. The mayor approved plans for 441 new homes on the site of a former Citroen car dealership, after the development was originally refused by Hounslow Council in February this year. After considering the scheme the mayor decided to ‘call in’ the scheme and make a final decision himself. The approved scheme includes a review mechanism which means that if building is not well underway within two years of the permission being granted, the developer could be compelled to provide further affordable homes. Khan said: “This scheme shows how we can unlock the potential of an underused site to build more of the genuinely affordable homes Londoners so urgently need. I’m clear that to fix the capital’s housing crisis Government must play its part, but we can make a difference now by ensuring developments include more genuinely affordable housing.” “I have carefully considered the impacts of these plans – particularly the effect on historic buildings.” Argent Related has submitted proposals for the mixed-use redevelopment of Tottenham Hale in North London, featuring landscape design by Grant Associates. Masterplanned by architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM), Alison Brooks Architects and Pollard Thomas Edwards alongside Grant Associates, the project will deliver some 1,036 new homes. The homes will be a mixture of affordable housing as well as market sale and rental properties. In addition, the site will include a health centre, cinema, office and retail space. These buildings will be interconnected by a new public realm of paved and open, green space equivalent in size to two football pitches. Argent Related formed a strategic development partnership with the council in 2016, with the remit of changing the existing road-bound central lands by the Tottenham Hale transport interchange. The masterplan encompasses five pieces of land earmarked for change, supporting London Borough of Haringey’s vision of a new ‘district centre’ for the area comprising; Asley Road East and West Ferry Island, North Island and Welbourne Centre.
