FOR TOWN CENTRE CAR PARK ISLANDS IN FORDINGBRIDGE , HAMPSHIRE

Background On the edge of the beautiful New Forest district of Hampshire lies the town Fordingbridge . A former market town , bustling Fordingbridge sits on the banks of the River Avon and boasts a 40-meter-long late medieval seven-arched bridge . Fordingbridge is famous for its smuggling and the infamous Captain Diamond , the `Smuggler King ’ who spent much of his time in a local hostelry !
Problem New Forest District Council were looking at the options available to resurface the town centre car park including the ‘ islands ’ that incorporate tree pits . The Council held a Public Consultation which resulted in the decision to address the following :
• The introduction of speed ramps .
• Installing electric car charging bays .
• Relocating parent and child parking spaces .
• Providing a taxi pick up / drop off area .
• Improving drainage and surface water issues .
The central and very busy car park is home to many delightful trees with irregular roots that sit proud of the surface level .
So , the material chosen for the tree pits and the ‘ islands ’ in which they sit , had to be able to address the root issue both sympathetically and aesthetically .
