CONTEMPORARY ART REVIEW
photographs are the first step towards a final art piece . What I like is the capturing of a pure moment and the mix of sublime landscape with road side scenery . From there I will spend time sketching and drawing from memory and from certain photos that have really struck me . When I start a painting it is usually from a drawing or photo reference , but it ’ s never an exact copy because what i ’ m interested in is capturing a feeling and an essence of a place . The objective is not to say , “ this was a painting of the highway in Oregon ” the point is the moment on the road and the moment of travel . I want all my scenes to be familiar , yet unknown . My hope is that any viewers , no matter how much they travel , will be able to see my work and feel a connection and know the overall sense of the place .
With there being so much build up of the traveling and documenting my style of painting and drawing is somewhat fast . It ’ s pretty normal for me to start a painting in the afternoon and finish it a few hours later before I go to bed . The quickness of the paintings almost reflects that snap of the camera . I get down what I want out of the paintings and when it ’ s right its done . I hardly ever go back to rework something once I ’ ve decided it ’ s complete .
