A Land of Many Wonders

A Haven for Nature

A land of many wonders, sandy beaches, stunning waterfalls, enticing food, rich history, and tropical weather--this is Guyana. Guyana is located on the eastern shoulder of South America, and is populated by more than 795,000 people according to a census conducted in 2012.The country is known as the land of six races: Chinese, Portuguese, European, Spanish, Aboriginal Indians, and Indian, of which have a significant influence on the culture and cuisine of Guyana. For what those six races could not do, Mother Nature has done the rest. Eighty percent of Guyana is covered by forests, making it unique to South America and the world. For all of you cultural maniacs, and food junkies, welcome to Guyana!

Do you like buffets? If so, Guyana has a buffet of unique cultures for you to choose from. Take your pick from any one. They each have their own distinctive style and flavor. Are you in the mood for the Latin culture? Put your dancing shoes on, and head out to Georgetown or anywhere in Guyana for Latin Night. It satisfies your craving for Caribbean-Latin traditions, music, and dancing (Salsa, Tango, Merengue, and Bachata). If you get bored of the Latin culture, take a dip into the Eastern Asia culture. Enjoy Indian Fridays. Savor the mouth-watering flavors of it all. Unfortunately, there is no single place of entertainment that offers all cultures in one. How could you forget an adventure like Guyana? With so many cultures inhabiting Guyana, you can imagine that Guyana is a paradise for food lovers around the world. Guyanese food reflects the ethnic structure of the country and its colonial background. Being part Guyanese myself, I have some expertise in this area. That being said, my favorite of foods that Guyana grows is Platanos (plantains). Not a plantain fan? No worries! There are countless naturally grown fruits and vegetables that you will love to sink your teeth into. Fat Pork, Awara, Guava, Sour-Sop, Grandilla, Sapodilla, Cassava (Yucca Root), Plantain, Avocado, and Bora, and Poi are only a few of the naturally grown vegetables and fruits that Guyana produces. Guyana is a melting pot. Go to “Latin Night” every Thursday night. They offer a Latin dinner buffet to satisfy your desire for Latin cuisine, and more. If your thirst for Latin food is quenched, every Friday night is “Indian Fridays”. Taste the spices and flavors of India.

Not only is Guyana a culture-rich environment offering tantalizing cuisine and miles upon miles of lush nature, it is ready to embrace and spoil you. As with any place you may travel, Guyana does have a few less desirable characteristics. Guyana is one of the few Caribbean countries that is not an island, which has not always made it a very tourist-friendly destination. At times, the heat and humidity can make the country feel like anything but a tropical escape. However, the natural beauties, and mysterious wonders of Guyana are the true beauty within the “beast.” Every country has its pros and cons. If you are up for an adventure of a lifetime, take a chance, and lose yourself in Guyana. I dare you not to fall in love!
