Girl Scout Troop # 37025
Collecting Acorns for the Maryland State Forestry Nursery
Girl Scout Troop 37025 made it their mission to help with local reforestation . They reached out to the Maryland State Nursery to see what trees are at risk , and what kind of acorns or seeds they would need to collect . The Maryland State Forestry Nursery needs 2,000 lbs of acorns every year . Because chestnut oaks are subject to disease , as we have seen in LLA , this is a critical species for reforestation .
Troop Leader , Katie Hager , placed a couple of tarps out to help collect the acorns . The acorns were collected in the evening on Monday , September 9th .
The troop collected 51 pounds or approximately 3,100 Chestnut Oak Acorns for donation to the Maryland State Forestry Nursery where they will be grown into seedlings for reforestation efforts !
