IN WHICH VILLAGE DO YOU RESIDE , AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER OF LLA ? WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO MAKE LLA YOUR HOME ?
My wife , Carolyn , and I have a home in the Nightingale Village where we are enjoying our retirement . Prior to moving to Nightingale , we owned property in Pinehurst and Woodridge Retreat , so have been part of LLA for about 50 years . We feel fortunate to have our retirement home here because of the beauty of the environment and its natural amenities , which have been shown to bring out the best in people . There are very few places such as this on the East Coast .
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE TOP 3 PRIORITIES FOR THE BOARD IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS ?
The priorities of the Board should coincide with those of Lake Linganore residents . We all purchased our homes here for a variety of reasons , but underlying those reasons was a desire to be part of a very special , beautiful place with a solid sense of community . Lake Linganore is that special place , and the Board should be doing its part not just to maintain
but to further enhance the ideals behind this community . To do this , I see three broad objectives :
Maintain the amenities such as our lakes and the green space , while looking to develop a broader selection of amenities to accommodate the ever-growing population . We have recently reestablished the Strategic Planning Committee to focus on this . Protect our reputation as a premium place to live , thus impacting the value of our homes . The Board of Directors is key in this regard by virtue of its responsibility to uphold the directives of the governing documents , especially the role of the Environmental Control Committee . Most important is continuing education within the community and working closely with developers to assure growth is managed in the best interests of the values of our community . Create more of a community environment . As we have grown , we may have also started to lose the feeling of connection to other villages . We need to be proactive in finding ways to create a sense of belonging and participation in the Lake Linganore community .

HOW MANY LLA BOARD MEETINGS AND WORK SESSIONS HAVE YOU ATTENDED IN THE LAST YEAR ? IF NONE , PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO RUN FOR THE BOARD , AND HOW YOU WILL EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT THE ASSOCIATIONS ’ WORK OVER THE LAST YEAR .
For the past two years , I ’ ve had the privilege to be president of the LLA Board . As such , I ’ ve attended all the general and work sessions . During this time , the Board defined several long-term goals necessary to enhance the community and maintain the quality of lakes . We ’ ve made significant progress toward these goals . However , there is still much to accomplish , and I would like to continue to be part of that effort .
CONSIDERING LLA ' S VISION OF NATURE AND SUSTAINABILITY ALONG WITH THE TODAY ’ S BUYER PREFERENCE FOR A “ TRADITIONAL ” COMMUNITY , AS A BOARD MEMBER , HOW WOULD YOU NAVIGATE THE DEMANDS OF BOTH PRESERVING THE INTENDED PLANS FOR LAKE LINGANORE WHILE MEETING THE NEEDS AND WANTS OF MEMBERS WHO HAVE LIVED HERE FOR DECADES AND THOSE OF RECENT AND FUTURE MEMBERS ?
Lake Linganore was conceived with a vision committed to building in sympathy with the land and preserving the natural environment . In the early 1970 ’ s this concept was unusual . It was so unique that the original developers won the First Annual Environment Honor Award “ for making environmental excellence a basic condition in the pursuit of corporate goals ” and another environmental award for architecture and engineering in 1974 . The goal was to create a family-friendly community where people could live , work , and play in a beautiful , natural environment . That vision has never died . It may be found etched into our governing documents . And it certainly may be found in the hearts of many who were attracted here originally and even those later who were attracted to the resultant beauty without realizing the original intent . Others have been attracted here simply because it ’ s an excellent place to live , close to work , and with some of the best schools . We all have different personal goals , but those don ’ t negate the appreciation we all have for living in a beautiful natural environment . The question , though , is how strictly we should follow the original plans for Lake Linganore . The underlying principles remain , and most residents care about the preservation of those principles . Those principles , especially those in the governing documents , should inform and direct decisions of the Board . We all accepted the governance of those documents when we purchased property here .
LAKE LINGANORE ASSOCIATION IS HOME TO 17,000 + FREDERICK COUNTY CITIZENS . MOVING FORWARD , WHAT KIND OF RELATIONSHIP DO YOU FEEL LLA SHOULD HAVE WITH THE GREATER FREDERICK COUNTY COMMUNITY ? WOULD YOU FAVOR ENGAGEMENT WITH THE COUNTY COUNCIL MEMBERS AND EXECUTIVE ? IF NOT , WHY ?
Our past relationship with the County has not always been positive . The feeling was that despite paying taxes at the same rate as other county residents , we were not getting the same level of services – or , in other words , not our fair share . However , I believe in recent years that relationship has greatly improved . At 17,000 + residents , we represent close to 6 % of the county population . As such , we should have a say in county issues , especially those that affect us . The obvious way we can all have a say in county issues is through our voices and our votes . The LLA management and the Board have a productive working relationship with the County officials , which should continue . But I believe it is even more important that Lake Linganore residents engage with the County . Having 30 voting residents at a meeting is frankly 30 times more effective than one Board member attending .
