Camp Fire Minnesota: A Century of Connecting Kids to Nature

For more than 100 years, Camp Fire Minnesota has connected young people to nature through summer camps, environmental education and after-school programs. Its environmental education curriculum includes 17 STEM lessons and 10 outdoor recreation modules, all aligned with Minnesota state standards.
Each year, more than 10,000 youths run, splash, learn and play on the shores of Lake Minnewashta. Over time, shoreline erosion, runoff challenges and limited water access hindered young people from fully enjoying the natural space. The restored and expanded beachfront now improves shoreline stability, reduces runoff and enhances access for swimming, boating, fishing and outdoor learning. In addition to addressing environmental concerns, the revitalized waterfront better supports hands-on education and recreation for thousands of youth each year.
Camp Fire Minnesota announced the completion of its waterfront restoration project on June 11, 2025, celebrating with community members, local officials, and staff from Camp Fire and CenterPoint Energy.
Supported by a $ 100,000 grant from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation, Camp Fire Minnesota implemented sustainable design practices to restore its shoreline while creating opportunities for youth to participate in science education and outdoor activities.
The restored waterfront offers more space to swim, enjoy the beach and learn about the plant species surrounding the waterfront, including fox sedge, little bluestem and June grass.
