Interim Artistic Director David Ellenstein
New Direction
Laguna Playhouse recently named an interim artistic director , David Ellenstein , who has been artistic director at North Coast Repertory Theatre in San Diego County ’ s Solana Beach since 2003 . Ellenstein started the Laguna job on Oct . 3 and will be at the helm through Jan . 1 , 2023 , while the board of directors continues its search to fill the position permanently ; Ellenstein will maintain his role at the North Coast venue during this time . The appointment comes after Ann E . Wareham stepped down as artistic director of Laguna Playhouse at the end of 2021 following 11 years of service . Additionally , Ellen Richard resigned as the Playhouse ’ s executive producing director in August ; during her tenure , she oversaw the historic theater ’ s renovation and led the 100-year-old organization through a nearly two-year closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic . During the transition , Ellenstein will assist with artistic and production needs for the Playhouse ’ s current season and help select shows for the 2023-2024 season .
