GOOD AS GOLD
Laguna Beach High School senior Ani Hovanesian earned her Girl Scout Gold Award in August after also attaining the Eagle Scout rank in Scouts BSA ( formerly known as the Boy Scouts ) in 2020 ; only a few people across the country have achieved both . Over the summer , Hovanesian completed the service project for her Girl Scout Gold Award , working with a nonprofit called STEM Sisterhood to inspire girls to take an interest in engineering and other technical fields . The organization serves girls at Community Roots Academy charter school , where Hovanesian taught a program that she created . Camp emPower participants learned about circuitry using sustainable energy by producing electricity from wind and water turbines , racing solar-powered cars and more . Hovanesian was assisted with instruction and mentoring by teammates from her FIRST ( For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology ) Tech Challenge robotics group at Capistrano Valley High School . Two years earlier , for her Eagle Scout project , Hovanesian organized a Space Camp pilot program at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach . A brightly colored temporary mural , “ There Goes My Hero ” by artist Ryan Callisto , was installed Sept . 1 on the performance deck of The Promenade on Forest Avenue — and will remain for about a year — in tribute to the late Foo Fighters drummer , Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and Laguna Beach High School graduate Taylor Hawkins , who passed away in March while on tour with the band in Colombia .
