3 kids abandoned
in Italy pizzeria
ROME (AP) _ Police in northern Italy
were searching on Tuesday for a German
couple who abandoned their three young
children after dining in a pizzeria and
then going out to smoke a cigarette.
Aosta police o?cial Lorenzo Mediano said in a phone interview from the
mountainous region in northwest Italy
that the couple and the children appeared
to be poor, judging by their clothes, and
the youngsters looked ``neglected,’’ although were in good health.
Pizzeria owner Carmelo Casella told
state TV in Aosta that, after they ate at
his restaurant Sunday night, the parents

went outside to smoke and never came
back. After 10 minutes, the pizzeria’s sta?
went outside to see what had happened
but the couple had vanished.
The three children are a baby of about
six months, a toddler of about two years,
and the eldest no older than six. Authorities didn’t give the sex of the children.
``These two older children didn’t understand anything,’’ Casella said. ``They
think their mother went to the bathroom
and hasn’t been able to ?nd her way back.’’
The couple’s car was late found on the
outskirts of the city, the TV report said.
The children were placed in a temporary
home by social services authorities, the
report said. .
Police located the maternal grandmother in Germany Tuesday evening,
the Italian news agency reported.
