Places to see and visit
L’oasis de Tozeur
Vaste de plus de 1 000 hectares,
plantée de près de 40 0000
palmiers et disposant de 200
sources d’eau remplacées par
des puits artésiens, l’oasis
de Tozeur est l’une des plus
belles et mieux entretenues de
la région. Elle borde la ville au
Sud sur environ 5 kilomètres.
Un havre de paix à découvrir à
pied, en vélo ou en calèche, pour
déguster les fameuses Deglet
Enour (dates de lumière), en
suivant le cours des ruisseaux et
des canaux d’irrigation.
Tozeur’s oasis
With over 1 000 hectares,
40 0000 palm trees and 200
water springs replaced by
artesian wells, Tozeur’s oasis is
one of the most beautiful and
better maintained in the region.
It borders the south of the city
on about 5 kilometers. A haven
of peace to discover by foot, bike
or carriage, along the streams
and irrigation canals, to taste
the famous Deglet Enour (dates
of light).
Le Tombeau d’Ibn Chabbat
Dans le quartier du Bled
el-Hade, juste à côté d’une
petite mosquée, un chemin
conduit au tombeau où repose,
sous une simple dalle nue, un
savant arabe du XIIIe siècle :
Ibn Chabbat, qui conçut un
ingénieux plan d’irrigation
toujours en application dans la
plupart des palmeraies.
Le Paradis
Dans le quartier Abbès, juste
après le marabout de Sidi Ali bou
Lifa, se trouve un merveilleux
petit jardin crée en 1934 et
planté d’arbres fruitiers. Avec un
peu de chance, un Tozerois vous
invitera à y déguster le lagmi, vin
de palme local.
The Tomb of Ibn Chabbat
In the Bled el-Hade
neighbourhood, right next to a
small mosque, a path leads to
the tomb where rests, under a
simple slab, an Arab scientist of
the 13th century : Ibn Chabbat,
who designed a clever irrigation
plan still in operation in most
palm groves.
The Paradise
In the Abbès district, right after
the marabout of Sidi Ali bou
Lifa, there is a marvellous little
garden created in 1934 and
planted with fruit trees. With a
bit of luck, somebody will invite
you to taste the lagmi, a local
palm wine.
On the Abou Kacem Chebbi
Avenue, after the tourist area,
you will arrive at the tomb of the
poet, a place called Chabia, a
belvedere where you will enjoy
an extensive view over the
oued’s arms, the palm grove and
the chott el Djerid.
Dar Cheraït
Remarquable musée de la ville,
fermé depuis la révolution et
fraîchement réouvert depuis
décembre, il met en scène des
tableaux typiques de la vie
bourgeoise au XIXe. Chaque
pièce est construite sur le
modèle du palais d’un notable
et montre un aspect de la vie
quotidienne : la cuisine, le
hammam, le salon des femmes
et celui des hommes, avec une
grande richesse de costumes,
d’armes et de bijoux. Mais plus
qu’un musée, Dar Cheraït est
aussi un petit complexe culturel,
où l’on trouve des boutiques,
des galeries d’expositions
(notamment une étonnante
collection de peinture sous
verre du XIXe) et un café maure.
Les jardins accueillent un parc
d’attractions s’inspirant des
contes des Mille et une nuits,
animé en soirée par un spectacle
de sons et lumières et Dar
Zamen, où vous découvrirez
3000 ans d’histoire de la Tunisie,
de la préhistoire à nos jours. I
Dar Cheraït
Remarkable museum in the city,
closed since the revolution and
recently reopened in December,
it presents typical paintings
depicting the lives of bourgeois
during the 19th century. Each
work of art shows the palace
of a prominent citizen and an
aspect of daily life : the kitchen,
the hammam, the women’s
living room and the men’s
one, with a great wealth of
costumes, weapons and jewels.
But more than just a museum,
Dar Cheraït is also a small
cultural centre, where we find
boutiques, exhibition gallerie s
(including a stunning collection
of reverse glass painting from
the 19th century) and a Moorish
café. The gardens house an
amusement park inspired by
the Tales of the Arabian Nights,
and Dar Zamen, where you will
discover 3000 years of Tunisian
history, from prehistoric times
to the present day. I

Pearl of the Djérid, like
Tunisians proudly call it,
Tozeur used to be, thanks
to its hotels and palaces
built as early as the 1970s,
a preferred place of leisure
for the international Jetset.
t
hanks to its international airport,
Tozeur is – for the oasis and
Saharan tourism enthusiasts –
the ideal gateway to Southern
Tunisia. Despite the revolution
and its consequences on the
tourism industry – the region was
until recently placed in red zone by the European
authorities and numerous hotel had to close their
doors because of the lack of visitors – the identity
and look towards the future with enthusiasm.
As soon as one leaves the airport and passes through
the city’s Arc de Triomphe, Tozeur reveals itself,
authentic and beautiful. Everything here expresses
the wealth of its thousand year old past and the pride
of its inhabitants. Thanks to a willingness to take care
of the heritage, the architectural identity has been
preserved, Tozeur’s buildings are in complete
harmony with the ochre sand that surrounds them.
Its famous mud brick façades form geometric
patterns that add to the richness of its official
buildings, its markets, its houses and its streets on a
human scale ; they affirm the city’s loyalty to an
ancestral memory and an attachment to traditions.
It is probably in the most ancient neighbourhood of the
town, Ouled el-Hadef, that we can discover the most
beautiful and typical examples of the Djerid
architecture. Some houses made of bricks date from
the 14th century. After a quick detour under the double
porch of Kairouan Street, you will find one of the most
ancient and most beautiful doors in Tunisia. This palm
wood door has stood the test of time. At the heart of
the Medina, there is also the Koranic school and its
huge minaret, as well as the house of the Bey with its
remarkable moucharabieh – a kind of palm wood
window, allowing women to loo k outside without being
seen – and famous since Anthony Minghella has
chosen this location to shoot some scenes of The
English Patient. Tourists should also visit the charming
Zaouia in Sidi Bou Aïssa, a Moroccan marabout, that
