Ladan ’ s clarity and confidence come from decades of experience . She knew by age 12 that she wanted to be an architect and builder . She remembers hiking with her father , a petroleum engineer , around the capital city near her home . “ He would explain how the city would develop – where housing and bridges would be constructed ,” she recalls . “ Where I ’ m originally from , architects were expected to build what they designed , so I was drawn to do both .”
A licensed contractor , Ladan holds a master ’ s degree from the UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Planning and a bachelor ’ s degree from Southern California Institute of
Architecture . In her 2nd year , Ladan witnessed half of her class fail because of the challenging curriculum – yet she remembers her educational experiences with great fondness . “ When I was going to architecture school , my professors encouraged me to write about the historical use of passive-solar in architecture , which gave me an opportunity to learn more about my cultural heritage .”
From Ladan ’ s perspective , many people mistakenly think that being an architect is like being an artist – not realizing that it ’ s actually a very rigorous and multi-dimensional field . “ It ’ s a merging of art and engineering in which the form must follow the function ,” she notes ,
