During Saturday mornings at the Bristol Harbourside market, under a peach and red coloured tent, one can find Bristol’s answer to the most authentic cannolo. I was lucky enough to have a chat with the brilliant founders of Bristol-based Omaggi, makers of fresh artisan cannoli.
Birthed out of a love for Italian cuisine, food-enthusiasts Ben and Emily have successfully brought to Bristol a dessert which is adorned, almost treasured in Sicily but perhaps not quite as well known in the UK. They are trailblazers in the fight to educating the British public on what a true cannolo is: “many people's experience of cannoli over here is often of the mini, 'long-life' versions you occasionally find present on a deli counter, left out for days and filled with flavoured buttercream instead of ricotta (sacrilege!). These imitations
are just not the same as a cannolo that has
been freshly filled with ricotta, into a freshly-
made, crisp shell and so we wanted to do
justice to cannoli”. And this is where Ben and
Emily got their namesake, Omaggi, wanting to
pay tribute or homage to the classic Sicilian
dessert.
