Medea at the Bristol Old Vic fuses the old tale with a modern retelling, and focuses on the power of women to reclaim their autonomy and not bring other women down. It’s a radically empowering feminist tale where traditional Greek culture is alluded to and current Nigerian culture is celebrated, the fusion occurring naturally and beautifully with a simplistic set and convincing multi-rolling.
The six actresses are stellar, each one giving their all and gifting the audience with their soaring, powerful voices. Akiya Henry playing Medea/Maddie is transcendent, but it is Stephanie Levi John as Jason/Jack who exhibits the most mind-blowing talent, changing vocal styles seamlessly and crying heart wrenching tears which in turn bring a tear to the eyes of any audience member with a heart.
