Letter from the Editors
Issue Twelve - March 2018
It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome you all to this new issue of La Civetta, the Italian Department’s magazine at the University of Bristol.
This issue has been challenging for us due to two reasons. Firstly, being editors for the first time has been a demanding but stimulating opportunity: the writers we have worked with have had interesting viewpoints and a strong desire to examine various current Italian issues of interest. Secondly, the choice to dedicate this edition to the general elections of March 4th 2018 has required great attention and consideration. This noteworthy moment in time has enabled us to analyse some aspects of our country that have been in the spotlight of the Italian news but might be less known to the English reader. You will find articles written from the unique viewpoint of our British students and Italian Erasmus students. Furthermore, our writers have been able to perform in-depth research and inform our readers about Italian topics using originality and creativity, elements that are essential for the success of our magazine.
We invite you all to read relevant current issues such as the problem of immigrant integration in Italy, the Italian reactions to newly emerging feminist movements like Time’s Up and Me Too, the impact of Brexit on Italian immigrants in the United Kingdom and the rise of far-right parties in the Italian political scene. These themes have obviously led us to highlight the current local issues involving the University of Bristol: you will have the opportunity to read an article about the reasons why our staff members have lately been on strike.
The purpose of La Civetta is not only to offer opinions about current problems but also to start a debate which everyone is able to contribute to. In conclusion, we encourage anyone who is interested in Italian and British culture to join this exciting magazine project. It will be a unique experience of confrontation on important issues and cultural enrichment.
We thank all our writers for their hard and passionate work.
Enjoy!
Dear readers,
Valeria & Marzia
